Pool Courtyard, Mission Bay
The owners of this period house in Mission Bay wanted pool, pool house and general garden improvements. In particular, they wanted to reflect Auckland's subtropical climate and lifestyle. Because of the small space available, great care was needed in the design and location of the pool and pool house and the surrounding landscape. The design approach was contemporary but with high quality natural materials such as stone tiles and sustainable timber. The planting comprised a subtle but rich mix of subtropical plants with an emphasis on foliage and gentle flower colour.

New pool house together with original house create a partly enclosed courtyard centred on the swimming pool. Paving is travertine and basalt which complements pool house cladding and the developing subtropical planting behind the glass pool fence. Screening is provided from neighbouring buildings to the right by a retained established clipped hedge.
Detail of path-side planting shows an avenue of citrus establishing over mixed foliage planting. The ferns to the left of the path thrive in the shade of the garage and pool house.
A new stone tiled path from the main entrance leads to the main garden courtyard with access to pool and deck. Planting in this intimate part of the garden is detailed and varied through the seasons
Lush textural planting forms a richly detailed setting to the pool surround.
The path to the pool and deck from the main house entrance is inviting and colourful.
